You’re Not the Boss of Me: Scraptastic July Sketch Challenge

I wanted to pop in to share the layout I did for the July Sketch Challenge with my Scraptastic July Kit. I stuck pretty close to the actual sketch this time around with only a couple of design deviations that actually work better for my pictures, patterned paper and embellishments.  This sketch is probably one of my favorites I have done so far because it just allowed me to incorporate all of my favorite layout design elements.

The rose floral stamps are an older Die-Namics die and stamp set that I recently discovered and it has quickly become one of my favorite to incorporate in my crafting. I have some other Wrapped Up Wednesday ideas that these stamps and dies will be making another appearance so stay tuned. Thank you for stopping by. More to come. Celia

Color Challenge: Color Story Inspiration with a Sketch Twist (CSI Case File #122)

CSI Case file No. 122: With the CSI challenges, you must use all five colors in the scheme, at least 2 elements in your layout from the evidence list and at least 1 element from the testimony. And this week they threw in an extra twist by adding a sketch.

122

Case Solved- The Layout: This was a really fun color combination and let me dig into my patterned paper stash for a layout that combined several different companies and collections (from Teresa Collins, Basic Grey to Simple Stories and My Mind’s Eye). The sketch was actually quite interesting and I liked the large white space with the suspended pictures and embellishments. I stuck to the sketch except for I had to put my spin on it by titling the white patterned foundation paper.

Girl Code Cover Update

The Evidence: The evidence list of this challenge was just made for my scrapbook style so I incorporated five items in the layout scheme. (1) Flowers- I used several die cuts to create a floral swag. (2) Something Transparent- I layered the black cardstock butterflies with a patterned vellum on top. (3) Cursive Font- I used a cursive font for the die cut title. (4) Circles- The white foundation paper was a little distressed but a little to0 stark white. So I created a circle mask and stamp and ink circles onto the foundation paper to create some more graphic texture. (5) I added a floral sprig on the black swag and leaves to the flowers.

The Testimony: This was a little more tricky for me- the picture is one of my favorites from my law school friend’s wedding. And lucky enough I was wearing my favorite orange dress and all my girlfriends looked fabulous and elegant.

Flower Power: Colored Pencils

The great thing about paper crafting is being able to color! Now, staying in the lines is a must but not so hard when you have beautiful floral stamps (Heartfelt Creations.. swoon) and matching dies.  So for this Flower Power segment I played with colored pencils. Not quite the Crayolas from my childhood but a selection of Prismacolor artist pencils.  My amateur Copic abilities have been highlighted on more than one occasion on the ole blog. Practice definitely makes perfect when blending with Copics. Colored pencils with the magic of gamsol is an altogether different story, even I can come across as a blending professional. A couple of swipes with the colored pencils in two shades blended with gamsol really set off the flowers in this layout. Another great effect of colored pencils is the more muted effect  that works better with the color profile and cream tones of the Fancy Pants Design papers in the As  You Wish collection.

This layout is one of my favorites- it is the perfect pairing of floral prints, stamping and paper layering.

Flower Power: Ink and Embossing Powder

If you have paid any attention to the meanderings and layouts featured on this blog its pretty obvious that I gravitate towards floral patterns. There is just something so beautiful and lovely about showcasing florals on layouts and crafts projects. Now, this could all be me over compensating for the fact that I have the worse green thumb imaginable. My only true gardening success was by happenstance and just plain ole dumb luck. One of my favorite design elements is to incorporate die cutting or stamping of flowers that mimic the floral patterned paper. Now, here is the caveat- I am no technique diva. So I am so happy that my embossing and inking florals turned out beautiful. The My Mind’s Eye Now and Then Collection had some serious gorgeous florals in my all time favorite color scheme of dusty pinks and teal.

So full frontal:

And a couple of detail shots to see the flower power up close and personal.  The MME Paper had these rose florals that I mimicked with an old die cut from Quickutz and these scribble stamp set from Papertrey ink. I stamped and embossed in white and then used the Tim Holtz Distress Inks to ink over the die cut circle and the embossed scribbles resisted the ink. With a light swipe with a baby wipe to take away any ink these florals came out a perfect match to the background floral paper. I did the same die cut, ink and emboss technique on the daisy and leaves. For the stem and berries, it was quick work to find a Silhouette cut mirrored the background paper with a little Wink of Stella glitter pen to give it that extra…umph!
