Color Challenge: Color Story Inspiration with a Sketch Twist (CSI Case File #122)

CSI Case file No. 122: With the CSI challenges, you must use all five colors in the scheme, at least 2 elements in your layout from the evidence list and at least 1 element from the testimony. And this week they threw in an extra twist by adding a sketch.

Case Solved- The Layout: This was a really fun color combination and let me dig into my patterned paper stash for a layout that combined several different companies and collections (from Teresa Collins, Basic Grey to Simple Stories and My Mind’s Eye). The sketch was actually quite interesting and I liked the large white space with the suspended pictures and embellishments. I stuck to the sketch except for I had to put my spin on it by titling the white patterned foundation paper.

Girl Code Cover Update

The Evidence: The evidence list of this challenge was just made for my scrapbook style so I incorporated five items in the layout scheme. (1) Flowers- I used several die cuts to create a floral swag. (2) Something Transparent- I layered the black cardstock butterflies with a patterned vellum on top. (3) Cursive Font- I used a cursive font for the die cut title. (4) Circles- The white foundation paper was a little distressed but a little to0 stark white. So I created a circle mask and stamp and ink circles onto the foundation paper to create some more graphic texture. (5) I added a floral sprig on the black swag and leaves to the flowers.

The Testimony: This was a little more tricky for me- the picture is one of my favorites from my law school friend’s wedding. And lucky enough I was wearing my favorite orange dress and all my girlfriends looked fabulous and elegant.

Color Challenge: Color Story Inspiration with a Sketch Twist (CSI Case File #118)

CSI Case file No. 118: With the CSI challenges, you must use all five colors in the scheme, at least 2 elements in your layout from the evidence list and at least 1 element from the testimony. And this week they threw in an extra twist by adding a sketch.

Case Solved- The Layout: I love  bright color schemes but the bright red with the soft seafoam green and yellow kinda sorta threw me for a second. But as I have said before, sometimes the inspiration comes from the pictures. The pictures here are of me feeling confident and happy wearing a fun red dress with some teal and red applique flowers. SO bam- I was able to connect the red with the other soft colors. Picture- check.  So now patterned paper. As I was going threw my stash I came across this pretty floral from Basic Grey’s Freshly Picked collection. Patterned Paper-Check. But ahh ease up there killer- neither the pictures NOR the background floral paper had that element of yellow required for the color scheme. I know I needed enough soft yellow to draw the eye but without distracting or seeming like a last minute thought forced into the layout. So…. drumming fingers on craft table.. A HA! I pulled out this beautiful bokeh paper from Glitz that had all of the colors in the scheme. That patterned paper paired with a small cut from a yellow gingham My Mind’s Eye patterned paper did the trick. I also tucked and smattered other yellow elements like the small butterflies and yellow vellum under my pictures to make the color scheme and design look cohesive.

Evidence: I had to be a little more clever with the evidence this time around- (1) Jewels- on the butterflies and the mini pink flowers (2) Hearts- Patterned paper on the scallops and the vertical piece (3) Arrows- Pointed chevrons (4) Fabric- Peekaboo tulle under the pictures (5) Fibers- Sewing on the layout (6) Pockets- The journaling is tucked in aenvelope pocket.

Testimony: I was able to hit two elements. I tucked my journaling in a pocket and my journaling was inspired by the word “confidence.” Because of the personal nature of the journaling I am keeping it tucked in the envelope so I can pull it out to remind myself that everyday I should choose happiness.

Color Challenge: Color Story Inspiration (CSI Case File #108)

Don’t blame me, blame the MEEEDIIA! Mixed Media, that is. For the classic scrapbooker, mixed media is a bit of a stretch. And for me, its more of a leap. I love all of the graphic design of patterned paper and most mixed media techniques either cover up or completely alter the paper. So this week’s CSI challenge was a challenge in deed.  But as always, I try to rise to the occasion. So, I gathered my stencils, paints, mists, stamps and sassy photos and got to work.

CSI Case file No. 108: With the CSI challenges, you must use all five colors in the scheme, at least 2 elements in your layout from the evidence list and at least 1 element from the testimony.

108flat

Case Solved- The Layout: The color scheme was interesting this time – muted colors with some interesting low lights (dark chocolate) and highlights (kiwi green). At first, I admit I was thrown because I could not see how all of these colors could work together. Then I just started flipping through my scrapbook collections mental rolodex and then POOF, it came to me. Crate Paper by Maggie Holmes- Flea Market. This collection has this running color theme of pink, aqua with hints of a yellowish green that is almost a direct match to the kiwi green. And since this week’s challenge definitely had an artistic bent, I grabbed a Prima 6×6 and the Julie Nutting stamp dolls that I have been dying to use on a layout.

hello SASSY cover

Evidence: I try to challenge myself to hit as many elements from the evidence list. This week so far was my best-  (1) Mixed Media Background (I took a piece of smooth cardstock and just went to town with inks, mists, paints and gel medium. I know it is a beginner’s shot at mixed media but this is what works for my scrapbook style); (2) Newsprint (I stamped the Julie Nutting dolls on a newsprint paper and colored the skin tone with copics); (3) Music element (The great thing about the dolls is cutting out some pretty clothes and the music paper from Prima was just the right touch); (4) Hearts (This element keeps coming up in challenges and I try to be as creative as possible by using heart stencils with mist and ink and adding a couple of wooden veneer hearts); (5) Flowers (I went with a beautiful floral patterned paper that incorporated most of the color scheme. I also added a special element by cutting the paper and adding eyelets for base to have flowers spilling forth from the layout); (6) Border Punch (I added a small scalloped border punch under my photos to ground the pictures); (7) Stamps (Anytime I can incorporate stamping into my layouts I try. Here I stamped a preview  “Autobiographical In Nature” that this layout was me telling a story about me.

hello SASSY 1

hello SASSY 2

hello SASSY 3

Testimony: I was able to incorporate two testimonial elements. The journaling was definitely inspired by me telling my story. The story behind the pictures and the smile. It is a story that I have never told, “Truth be told, I don’t really like my natural smile. It’s too gummy and my eyes squint.  Here, I was going for that perfect pose with the manufactured smile and sassy stance. Except one shot was a natural smile and for once it’s my favorite.”

Color Challenge: Color Story Inspiration (CSI Case File # 107)

Shock and Awe.  If you follow my blog, besides the shock of me blogging this much, you should also be awed for me doing this many challenges in a row.  This one was pretty hard for me. I do not mind going out of my comfort zone- trying new things to take my creativity to the next level. However, after this layout I admit to a sticking to my “style” kind of gal.  And in some ways, admitting that about scrapbooking is coming to grips about my take on life.  With that said, lets get into it.

CSI Case File No. 107: With the CSI challenges, you must use all five colors in the scheme, at least 2 elements in your layout from the evidence list and at least 1 element from the testimony.

107flat

Case Solved- The Layout: As soon as I saw this color scheme I instantly thought of the My Mind’s Eye The Sweetest Thing Honey Collection.  So I started with that beautiful collection coupled with my favorite shot of the Grand Canal in Venice and got to work.  I started off trying to do a grid layout with the reverse side of the chevron paper and no matter how many bits and pieces I cut and moved around it just would NOT work to my eyes. Then I flip the paper over and that pink chevron framed by the spirograph print just made sense. Here is the lesson for today folks- Your know when you see it. Creative aesthetics is what your eye beholds. If it just does not look right to you – don’t force it. There is nothing wrong with being true to your style.

Highlights cover

The Evidence: I went for it this time and tried to hit as many elements as I could from the evidence list. I did not hit super start level but not too shabby coming in at 5. Count ’em baby- Flowers (Utilized a floral print and did you notice me working the floral embossing on the color scheme yellow horizontal feature); Badge/Flair (the pretty pink flair on the focal photo); Heart (There is just love all over this layout with heart punches, heart paper clip, geotag with heart and heart flair sitting on top of  round heart die cut); Mini brads (this was a bit of a free spot for me since I generally incorporate brads in just about every layout); Long title (I was not sure if this qualified or not but my title is abut six inches in length).

Highlights 3 Highlights 1

The Testimony: This was a bit of a doozy for me. The design of this layout really only worked with tucked away journaling. So I added a vellum envelope tucked behind the picture of Brad and I. To bring attention to the journaling I overlapped the envelope flap onto the picture and added some embellishment. The pictures that I scraped was not conducive to most of the testimony prompts but I was inspired by the word “awesome” because this was an awesome vacation and seeing the Grand Canal for the first time leaves you with nothing but shock and awe.

Color Challenge: Color Stories Inspiration (CSI Case File #106)

After doing this latest CSI challenge – I feel like singing a little Color Me Bad because that is exactly how I felt after completing this layout. It was just magic. I saw the color scheme and I immediately thought of this picture of me I have been waiting for just the right inspiration to scrap. Printed the picture like a Polaroid, went through my stash of papers, project life cards and other tidbits and BAM case solved!

CSI Case File No. 106: With the CSI challenges, you must use all five colors in the scheme, at least 2 elements in your layout from the evidence list and at least 1 element from the testimony.

106flat

Case Solved- The Layout: As said above, the color scheme was perfect for this picture of me looking extra happy wearing a peachy orange top.  I pulled out the wonderful patterned paper by Chic Tags.  Most of us know this relatively new paper crafts company from their wonderful tags and other paper embellishment tidbits. They now have added patterned paper to their collections and I have to say I am smitten! I have always been a sucker for typography. So that coupled with the great heavy weight of their cardstock  and I could not have asked for a more perfect background to this layout.

Be Happy 1

Evidence: I was able to incorporate four design elements from the evidence list: (1)  Ombre effect (I used two Heidi Swapp Color Shine mist and a stencil to create a ombre effect on white paper as one of the foundation papers behind my focal point of pictures and embellishment); (2) Arrows (I was sneaky with this one by using a Silhouette die cut of a heart arrow to draw focus to my title and another arrow up to top to draw attention to my copic colored flowers and subtitle); (3) Gold (I smattered around gold embellishments throughout the layout with the gold heart up top, gold-edged sunburst label and gold scallop under the floral patterned paper); (4) Stripes (I was not completely sure if this qualifies but I used the chevron striped paper as an additional foundation paper).

Be Happy 4 Be Happy 5

Some pretty copic colored flowers just for you. Notice, I did not use the typical Momento Tuxedo Black but instead switched it out with the Momento London Fog. Because of the softness of the color palette I thought that the black ink would be too bold. The gray was just perfect to set off these flowers especially after adding a little sparkle with the Spica glitter pens- which does not pick up well on camera. I like to take cues from my patterned paper choices. The Basic Grey Fiction floral paper had these smaller flowers made of hearts as petals. So I mimicked that with a mini heart punch and red patterned paper.

Testimony: I numbered my journaling of three noteworthy quotes on happiness. So that brings me to testimony element number 2 and that is the quote from Audrey Hepburn which inspired my journaling. She says “..to be happy- its all that matters” (emphasis added).  That phrase inspired the choice of journaling and my title.

Be Happy 7

Thank you for stopping by. More to Come. Celia

UPDATE: I am immensely proud of this layout and I made the CSI “Watch List” for this Challenge!
